ICE, Ogden Police and Flock Cameras | One Ogden Now
What is Ogden Police supposed to do when ICE is making an arrest? How involved are Weber County deputies in federal immigration enforcement? And who gets to decide where Flock license-plate cameras operate?
Kiki Bushman and Jefferson Shepherd dig into three connected debates over policing, immigration and surveillance in Weber County.
We start in Ogden, where residents are pushing city leaders for a clearer policy defining the role of Ogden Police when ICE is making an arrest. Mayor Ben Nadolski says the city had already been working toward putting guidance in writing.
Then we look at Weber County’s participation in the federal 287(g) program. Deputies logged 236 hours of reimbursable ICE work from January through July. KUER’s reporting also found that 35 of 91 people arrested through Ogden’s 287(g) program had no prior criminal history.
KUER reporter Macy Lipkin joins us to talk about what she’s learned covering immigration in Utah: the abandoned Salt Lake City ICE detention-center proposal, immigration-court backlogs and accelerated case closures, DACA renewal delays, Weber County’s ICE agreement and why Ogden has become one of Utah’s more active cities for immigration enforcement.
Finally, we return to Flock license-plate cameras. Washington Terrace canceled its own three-camera trial, but Weber County already operates cameras inside the city. Now city leaders are asking whether those cameras can be removed or deactivated — and raising larger questions about who owns the cameras, who controls the data and whether a city can simply say no.
